Fulkerson Winery Expands Vineyard Plantings: Riesling Becomes the Focus

Dundee, NY – October 19, 2007 – Fulkerson Winery, along State Route 14 on the West side of Seneca Lake, continues to expand in many directions. Sayre Fulkerson, Owner and Winemaker, is building toward the future for both the need for more Riesling grapes and adding and expanding the winery’s diversity of dry red wine offerings. Sayre commented that, “Riesling has become the shining star of New York State and we are prepared to see ourselves forward during this growth and appreciation of that noblest of white grapes.” Fulkerson Winery’s new vineyard plantings over the past two years are led by the ever important addition of 12.6 acres of Riesling vines which brings our total to 22.2 acres of Riesling on the Fulkerson Farm. New plantings of Noiret, 5.1 acres; Cabernet Sauvignon, 2.2 acres; Himrod, 4 acres; and small additions of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Valvin Muscat round out the 2007 planting season. The total grape vineyard acreage on the Fulkerson Farm is presently at 106 acres.

In the spring of 2007, Fulkerson Winery released its first vintage of the 2005 Noiret, and quickly sold out of this dark colored, intense flavored peppery dry red wine. Fulkerson was the third winery to release Noiret as a wine in the US. We recently released our famous 2005 Caleb, a dry red wine that is a blend of Noiret 50%, Cabernet Sauvignon 25% and Cabernet Franc ($13.99 btl.). The seedless Himrod grape has become an integral part of our Matinee wine, blended with the Lakemont grape imparts minty and tropical flavors. Matinee is a sweet-light flavored wine that is approx. 7% alcohol, with the 2006 Matinee vintage coming in at 7.2% rs ($13.99 btl.).

In the next several years Fulkerson Winery plans on adding 25 plus acres of other grape varieties, including Riesling, Noiret, Corot Noir and Traminette. The Fulkerson Farm’s Grape-Vine Nursery is busy producing more grape vines for many years to come, adding diverse grapes for both our award winning wines and for our home winemaking juice for the 5,000 plus juice customers who buy grape juice to make wine every September and October through the Fulkerson Juice Plant.

Fulkerson Winery’s need for wine grapes go beyond our own acreage to include Harlan Fulkerson’s grapes, Sayre Fulkerson’s brother and Ken Fulkerson’s grapes, Sayre’s nephew. Just a few miles South on State Route 14 along the West side of Seneca Lake, Harlan and Ken Fulkerson work 90 acres of Grape Vines. Grape varieties that Sayre buys from his family include Gewurztraminer, Lemberger, Cabernet Sauvignon,  Pinot Gris, Traminette and Cayuga. Harlan and his son plan to continue expanding the vineyard acreage, adding Riesling, Noiret and Cayuga in the coming year.

Fulkerson Winery was founded in 1989 by Sayre and Nancy Fulkerson. The Fulkerson Farm was established in 1805 by Caleb Fulkerson, a veteran of the Revolutionary War. Fulkerson Winery is very positive about our future sales and growth potential. The winery currently produces 15,000 plus cases of wine each year. The market for our award winning wines stretches throughout New York State, from New York City to Buffalo. We distribute our wines in Iowa, Illinois, Virginia and Florida and also ship to many customers in reciprocal shipping states.
